Field Experience (Independent Study)

Supervisor: Dr. Tonya G. Bartell, Michigan State University

Overview of Goals for Field Experience:

I will volunteer during mathematics lessons in a fourth-grade classroom during the school year, 2016-2017.

My professional goals include teaching both elementary mathematics content and methods courses for future teachers, and supporting local practicing teachers in developing their professional decision-making for use of instructional technology in mathematics teaching and learning.

Because my background does not include teaching experience at the K-6 level, and because my only classroom experiences have focused on observing my preservice teachers, I felt that field experience component was critical for me in order to support the learning of future and practicing teachers.

Throughout this school year, then, I will volunteer approximately 5 hours per week for a fourth-grade teacher. My time will be focused on mathematics lessons. I was fortunate to find support in identifying a teacher that would allow me to help out (and potentially disrupt!) her class for a year. She has agreed to allow me to

  • observe lessons and interact with the students,
  • assist with activities,
  • plan and lead some activities, and eventually
  • help to plan and teach some lessons.

I will write weekly reflections as blog posts, and link to them here.
